food that can make you happy

Can food really make you happy? Well if you ask me, I am never happier than when in front of  large spinach pizza, in the certain knowledge that there is also creamy cheesecake wating for me somewhere in the fridge... This happiness doesn't last long though, the minute I have given in into my guilty pleasure, I feel tired and slugish, and somewhat moody straight after...

All the food and diet experts will tell you that extremely sugary food such as cakes, biscuits and white breads are on the bottom list when it comes to mood boosting foods.

Here are some happy meals for you:

Oily fish such as salmon and or tuna, is full of Omega 3, which is a great brain food and is said to lift your mood.

Chocolate ( now I have your attention, don't I?) but only the dark variety, is said to stimulate natural antidepressants in the brain.

Leavy green vegetables are rich in Vitamin B and will have a positive effect on your nervous system. Spinach is especially high  in minerals believed to fight anxiety and depression.

Brazil nuts contain the natural booster Selenium.

Protein rich foods such as eggs, yoghurt, fish and meat will give you more energy and lift your mood.

Hot chilli peppers contain chemicals that release Endorphins and can make you feel happier.

Bananas contain a chemical called Tryptophan, a type of protein that the body converts into a feel- good hormone called Serotonin.

Dehydration will make you feel tired and moody, so make sure to drink loads of fresh water and eat loads of fruits and veggies!

Top Tipp:
The smell of citrus fruits has been proven to make people feel happier! Try putting a few drops of lemon essential oil in an oil burner to fragrance your living room!

What are you mood boosting foods?

  1. Citrus definitely lifts my mood! I use the Plink garbage disposal cleaner in orange citrus and it instantly make me happier! Having vanilla scented things around also warms my heart and it is scientifically proven to curve appetite!

  8. I agree totally with the citrus, it almost always cheers me up and makes me feel better when ever queasy. No wonder I always tell people to drink orange juice whenever they feel out of rhythm ;)
